The Open Source world continues to gain market share. Second Life is following the open source trend unlocking its server code to allow for other companies to host their own internal second life's.
Whats exciting about this fascinating experiment by Second Life is how the company(Linden Lab) is going to continue to generate revenue by releasing the code.
Currently Linden Lab's main source of revenue is by selling virtual property within the virtual world of Second Life. By moving Second Life it will allow for all companies to develop and create their own worlds/properties. This will allow for Second Life to move into a larger market and more services will become available as companies develop services for the virtual world.
Second Life's open source attempt is going to be quite the experiment in allowing for internalization by companies to use the virtual world in a real world environment.
I can't wait to see what develops from Second Life after it moves to open source. Its future looks very promising considering the amount of money within the virtual world has hit up to $60 million USD.

Linden Lab was very creative with the idea of Second life. Recently Google launched its free version of a 3D virtual environment called Lively. Google plans on filling holes where Second Life failed at. (Google and Microsoft just want their hands in every pot don't they!) Since Google is so big do you think businesses and Corporations will migrate to Lively and forget about Second Life?
ReplyDeleteHmmm...time will tell. Lively definitely deserves a look. I am waiting for virtual systems, such as Second Life, to be more user friendly.

Second Life has a very good chance at succeeding. They obviously have potential. Do they offer some kind of donation program in addtion to purchasing land? Surely they have other sources of income. Jabari kind of touched on this above, but another thought came to mind. Will Google swoop in and take over Second Life? I guess as Dr. Keane said, "Time will tell".
